Since the 2nd Velázquez Painting & Sculpture Competition was announced to the world on January 4, 2022, it has received warm responses and active support from artists at home and around the world. According to the statistics of the organizing committee of the competition, in addition to China, there are also Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Greece, Romania, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Russia, Hungary. , Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Bulgaria, Latvia, Iran, Bangladesh, Thailand, India, Philippines, Pakistan, Mexico, Cuba, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, Panama, Argentina, Honduras, Morocco, Ecuador, Nigeria, South Africa, Australia Artists from more than 40 countries, teachers and students of art academies, and art lovers, covering six continents: Asia, Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Africa; a total of 972 people signed up, with 2,356 entries (pieces), Among them, there are 193 international artists, with 569 entries, accounting for a quarter of the total entries.

According to the competition evaluation rules, sixteen judges from six countries including China, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan adopted the method of numbered blind evaluation and voting, and carefully screened and evaluated all the entries. The first round of judging selected 567 shortlisted works from 2,356 pieces (pieces); after that, the second round of judging was conducted on this basis, that is, the final award judging. At present, the evaluation work of the competition has been completed, and the final award evaluation results are now announced to the world in four languages: Chinese, English, Spanish, and Italian.

ModPortrait 2021, Artelibre Gallery Zaragoza and MEAM of Barcelona

Exhibition of the winning works in ModPortrait, the international contemporary portrait competition called by the Artelibre Gallery in collaboration with the MEAM.

With the support of the Arts and Artists Foundation and the MEAM of Barcelona (MEAM), the Zaragoza virtual gallery Artelibre has brought together, around this contest, a series of international artists in the portrait modality where it is intended to enhance figuration and academicism, the result of great ideas and conscientious and elaborate work, giving special importance to realistic and hyperrealistic art.

Last Friday, October 8, 2021, the MEAM hosted the joint awards ceremony of the most important contests in the figurative art scene, the 11th International Painting and Sculpture Competition Figurativas 2021 of the Arts and Artists Foundation, and the 15th ARC International Salon of Art Renewal Center.

The most interesting thing about contests, contests or groups, is not deciding who is the best among those who present themselves, but rather that it is possible to create a forum in which the best that is being produced at that moment is represented and is end up being able to generate a global sample of the most interesting among what is being created in the field of the contest. Only in this way, an encounter of this type serves to learn and to advance.

The important thing about this contest is not to choose the winner – that’s why we already eliminated this formula in its day – but to make it clear that, even in a time when the image of painting and sculpture is so reviled in its most traditional concept, there is a level powerful and very valuable general, growing and extended by the most diverse countries, on a scale that was difficult to imagine.

If this initiative is of any use, it is to keep high the banner of great Art, the aspiration to the best of ourselves, without conforming only to what is possible. The certification of the does not renounce anything. The will to continue on the path of the European tradition, now global. Coming from the most diverse countries, we gather here a series of works —many of them by still unknown authors— of undoubted value due to the formal commitment they represent, interesting contributions to a universal language, a bastion against the chaos of forms in which the world ended up degenerating. experimentation of the last century, and that is still dragging on without a clear course to follow …

Tomáš Kubík’s first participation in the competition organized by The Royal Society of Portrait Painters in London brought him a special award (Highly Commended) by Burke’s Peerage Foundation – Award for Classically Inspired Portrait for the portrait “David in the Renaissance style”. More info.

At the exhibition, Tomáš Kubík presents two of his recent series of paintings – The Project Michelangelo cycle and The Death and the Maiden cycle, as well as the Renaissance Document portrait series and a number of drawings. The author very quickly worked his way up from landscape painting and hyperrealistic still lifes to contemporary figurative paintings inspired by the Renaissance and Mannerism, and became a recognizable artist.

In The Project Michelangelo cycle, Tomáš Kubík was inspired by his admiration and study of the work of Michelangelo Buonarroti. The result is impressive large-format paintings painted using the classical oil painting technique, in which the viewer finds references to the present, such as tattoos or other hidden details.

The Death and Girl cycle is a set of paintings that were created in an unconventional way, when the author used real “sculptures” – realistic plaster casts – as a template. The result is very plastic paintings that develop the popular Baroque themes of Vanitas and Memento mori.

The exhibition is complemented by a painting of Máří Magdaléna, with which Tomáš Kubík took part in a large survey of European figurative art in Barcelona, ​​as well as a number of drawings and sketches.

MgA.Tomáš Kubík studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the studio of classical painting techniques of prof. Zdenek Berana and in the intermediate studio of prof. Milan Knížák. He specializes mainly in realistic figure painting.

In his portfolio we can also find a number of other painting genres and techniques (still life, landscape painting, pastel, line drawing, etc.). His greatest inspiration is the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the paintings of the old masters, where he finds qualities that are often lacking in “contemporary” painting. Tomáš Kubík’s paintings can be seen in the collections of NG in Prague and in the private collections of art lovers around the world.

The MEAM will host the Award Ceremony and the Opening of the exhibition of the awarded works in the 10th International Painting and Sculpture Competition of the Arts and Artists Foundation.

The 14th ARC International Salon will hang alongside the MEAM’s representational painting and sculpture competition, Figurativas. The ARC Salon live show will then travel to Sotheby’s, NY where it will be on Exhibit from July 17th – July 27th, 2020 with our Grand Public Opening on Saturday, July 18th from 11 am – 3 pm.

This awe-inspiring international event will have artists from all over the world present and hundreds of people in attendance, showcasing the truly international nature and collaborative spirit of this new wave in contemporary art.

The Art Mozaika Gallery and the Royal Canon of Premonstratensians in Strahov would like to invite you for the ceremonial opening of the exhibition of the renowned Czech author MgA. Tomáš Kubík: “Tomáš Kubík – Drawings, thoughts, notes…”

Tomáš Kubík studied at the Prague Academy of Arts in the now legendary studio of prof. Zdenek Berana. After an initial period when he mainly devoted himself to landscape painting and painting precise hyperrealistic still lifes, he found his subject in figure painting. He is the author of a number of large-scale figurative paintings, one of which was purchased by the National Gallery in Prague for its collections.

The exhibition in the Strahov Monastery will feature drawings, designs, sketches, as well as more finished works created between the 1990s and the present day. The exhibition is divided into several thematic areas.

The author’s preparatory drawings, sketches for paintings, records of ideas from sketchbooks with labels are significantly represented here. It is a kind of intimate insight into the process of creating an image, a look into the author’s kitchen. Unlike the finished paintings, these drawings have never been presented yet!

Another theme is the portrait, which Kubík devotes himself to continuously throughout his work. (He is the author of a representative portrait of the rector of Charles University, Prof. JUDr. Karel Maly, which has been located in Prague’s Karolín in a unique portrait gallery since 1882.)
The exhibition features portrait drawings made using the dry pastel technique, Roman red drawings on tinted backgrounds explained with white, precisely executed pencil drawings and, in one case, the sgraffito technique.

You can also see several figural compositions of a larger format, processed using a combined technique. They are mostly “cardboards” and variants of image cycles that Tomáš Kubík has worked on over the years.

Last but not least, line drawings should be mentioned. The author considers the technique of line drawing to be the “royal” technique of drawing. At the exhibition we don’t go line drawings of nudes, inspired by Michelangelo’s line drawings, self-portraits and note drawings from sketchbooks.

Among the pieces on display are several oil paintings. These are smaller formats painted with oil paints on lined paper or on panel. The theme is again figural composition, depiction of the human body or portrait in various environments and light atmospheres.

From the entire collection of paintings, the author’s inspiration is clear from pre-modern painting, a tendency towards artisanal perfection, which we see, for example, in Renaissance and Baroque artists. Kubík uses these techniques to portray his own themes, which he draws from his life, from the present and across artistic and cultural history.
